(CNN 6/30/2024)

“Saying ‘In’ Long Island is a Dead Giveaway That You’re not from here.”

Manhattan resident John Avlon can’t help himself from saying “in” Long Island—a mistake mostly made by non-Long Islanders…

Avlon: NYC Resident or Tax Cheat?

CNN commentator and Manhattan elitist John Avlon, who is the Democrat candidate running against Republican Congressman Nick LaLota to represent the First Congressional District on Long Island, is either a Manhattan resident attempting to use his Sag Harbor summer home to run for office to represent a people he doesn’t know or he’s a tax cheat.

In April 2024, The Messenger reported that John Avlon’s Manhattan home is in a building with six units currently enrolled in the NYC co-op/condo tax abatement program,a requirement of which mandates that those enrolled in the program use their Manhattan co-op as their legal primary residence–which poses a problem for Avlon’s claim to live on Long Island and for his bid to represent Long Islanders in Congress.

Long Island is an area to which Avlon has zero ties but for his new ritzy summer home in Sag Harbor, which, until recently, Avlon listed as a rental house on Apartments.com for other people to fully occupy–a strange arrangement for someone who claims to be a full-time Long Island resident.

Manhattan Avlon Can’t Have it Both Ways

Avlon stated earlier this year that his wife and kids would remain in Manhattan–and fend for themselves against the rampant crime in DA Alvin Bragg’s New York City without him while he holed up in Sag Harbor alone for the first several months of the campaign–until the end of the school year, further solidifying the fact that Manhattan is his true full-time residence.

“Avlon’s attachments to NYC are evident in his real estate holdings. His Gramercy Park co-op, located at [# omitted for privacy] East 19th Street, Unit [# omitted for privacy], was purchased in 2015 for $3.6 million…Tax records obtained by The Messenger from the New York City Department of Finance shows that the building, which includes [# omitted for privacy] East 19th Street, are enrolled in the NYC co-op/condo tax abatement program. Enrollment in the program requires that all tenants have their units as their primary residences. The tax block number, 875, and tax lot number, 38, are shown on the bill of sale of Avlon’s unit in his name and are corroborated by the NYC Department of Buildings website.”

That same Messenger article documented sightings of Avlon coming and going from his Manhattan apartment for several weeks in the spring of 2024, during his active run for Congress against Republican Long Island Congressman Nick LaLota.

But Avlon now claims that he lives full time at his summer home in Sag Harbor, which he purchased in 2017 and had recently been listed for summer rental on Apartments.com, abandoning his wife and young children to continue to live in their Manhattan co-op without him.

Like many Manhattan residents who also own property in the Hamptons and use their secondary Hamptons addresses to register to vote in and influence elections in Suffolk County, rather than vote in Manhattan where they actually reside, John Avlon registered to vote in Suffolk elections in 2020 using his Sag Harbor summer home address.

The Messenger reported Suffolk County Board of Elections records showing Avlon voted by absentee ballot in the 2021, 2022, and 2023 November General Elections–meaning, he wasn’t here on Long Island for any of those November elections, further supporting the idea that Avlon is primarily a Manhattanite.

While this makes sense for someone living in Manhattan but voting from their summer home in Sag Harbor, with Avlon claiming his full primary residence is now his Sag Harbor summer home, this means Avlon is illegally accepting a tax benefit on his Manhattan residence meant only for true Manhattan residents.

Is John Avlon a Manhattan resident or is John Avlon a NYC property tax cheat? He can’t have it both ways; it can only be be one or the other.

EDITORIAL: AVLON NOT THE FIRST OUT-OF-TOWNER TO PARACHUTE ONTO LONG ISLAND SEEKING OFFICE

Manhattan’s John Avlon is not the first out-of-towner to parachute onto Long Island to run for office but the trend shows a string of failures by opportunistic Manhattanites and out-of-state elitists seeking to represent a people they do not know…
